Vacuum cleaner features to consider

CORD LENGTH

Corded vacuums are great for larger areas and have bigger capacity. Cordless is more flexible, reaching almost anywhere but needs to be re-charged regularly.

POWER

Generally, higher wattage means more power, but not always. Other factors will affect the suction power, such as airflow, the vacuum's design and the quality of brush.

CAPACITY

Usually between 1-6 litres. The higher capacity a vacuum has, the less you'll need to change the bag or empty the chamber.

RUN TIME

This refers to how long a cordless vacuum cleaner will run on a single charge. Most can last around 15-20 minutes but others can run for 60 minutes, before re-charging.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Vacuum cleaners must legally show an energy efficiency rating label based on performance, dust re-emission, noise and power consumption. These classifications range from A-G, with A being the most efficient.

FILTERS

This is important for allergy sufferers. HEPA filters trap 99.97% of the smallest dust particles. Whilst charcoal filters are ideal for pets by filtering unpleasant smells.

BAGGED OR BAGLESS VACUUMS?

By going bagless with your vacuum, you can certainly save some pennies. However, for allergy sufferers (and generally less mess), bags can be an easy and helpful way to remove dust and dirt in one fell swoop.

OTHER TYPES OF VACUUM CLEANERS

STEAM CLEANERS

These produce steam which removes dirt and stains from floors. There's three main types: mop, handheld and cylinder. Mops are ideal for hard floors, with some suitable for laminate and wood floors. Handheld steam cleaners are best for cleaning small areas and hard to reach spots. Cylinder cleaners are a good all-in-one choice for both larger areas and tough stains, with specific tools available and longer steaming times.

WINDOW VACUUMS

Suck surfaces dry with a streak-free finish. Ideal for removing condensation from windows as well as excess water from mirrors, shower screens and tiles. Window vacs are cordless and lightweight, making them a great portable option. They're battery powered and need to be re-charged after around 30 minutes of use.

CARPET WASHERS

Clean carpets and rugs using a mixture of water and detergent. The powerful suction lifts dirt deep down in the carpet fibres, with many models featuring a performance brush to help release ground-in stains. Tools are available to help with cleaning tough spots and hard to reach areas.
