What are the different types of tumble dryer?

Vented tumble dryers Shop all vented tumble dryers

Moisture is pumped out through a hose, which can be placed through an open window or professionally installed through a vent.

They're less expensive to buy, but are less energy efficient, so they cost more to use.

Condenser tumble dryers Shop all condenser tumble dryers

Moisture is condensed into water and stored in a tank. You can empty the tank easily when it's full.

They cost more than a vented dryer, but they can be used anywhere in your home. They cost about as much to use as a vented dryer.

Heat pump tumble dryers Shop all heat pump tumble dryers

Gathers water in a tank like a condenser, but the hot air doesn't escape and is re-used.

They're more expensive to buy, but cost significantly less to run. They can be placed anywhere in your home.

What about a washer dryer?

The obvious benefit of having a washer dryer is that it costs you less to buy one single appliance, and it saves space.

However, the drum size of a washer dryer is much smaller, so there's less room for hot air to circulate inside.

This is fine is you're mostly washing and drying small loads. But if you're likely to fill the drum, it may take more cycles to dry fabrics, costing you more.

What's an integrated tumble dryer? Shop all integrated tumble dryers

An integrated appliance is one that's designed to sit behind a cupboard door in your kitchen.

This makes everything in your kitchen match. You won't be able to see the tumble dryer until you open the cupboard door.

Condenser dryer

£80 per year

Heat pump dryer

£30 per year

Tumble dryer running costs - what to consider

  • How many times a week will you use your dryer?
  • The average dryer will last about 10 years.
  • A low cost dryer may cost you more in running costs over the long term.
  • Larger dryers are more efficient than smaller dryers (if you fill them).
  • A+++ is the highest energy rating for a tumble dryer, with C being the lowest.

The difference between automatic sensor, manual and smart tumble dryers

Automatic sensor dryers

These detect when your laundry is dry and stop the dryer. There's no need to set a timer.

The dryer doesn't run longer than it needs to and your clothes should be properly dried when you open the dryer.

Manual dryer

These use a programmable timer. Any pre-sets are based on an estimate, it may take less or more time to dry your clothes.

They are usually less expensive than an automatic sensor dryer.

Smart WiFi dryers

WiFi enabled tumble dryers can be controlled by an app on your phone.

Important tumble dryer features

Different fabric cycles are available with each tumble dryer - make sure a dryer has the cycles you need before you buy.

Other useful features to look out for include:

Anti-crease

If you don't take your clothes out when the cycle finishes, the dryer will spin the drum to stop creases from setting in.

Delay start

You can program your dryer to have your clothes ready at a certain time, such as when you get home from work.

Half load

Helps you to save energy when you only need to dry a few items.

Reverse tumble

The drum can rotate both ways. This helps to prevent tangles and reduce creases.

Filter full indicator

Alerts you to when the filter needs changing. Not cleaning the filter is one of the main reasons dryers become damaged.

Freshen up cycle

Helps to freshen up clothes that have become dusty or have a slight odour.
