Before you start

You'll need to think about a few different aspects relating to how you're going to be using your mobility scooter.

Will you be travelling long distances?

If you want to use your scooter to regularly travel over longer distances, choose one that can travel on-road with a longer battery life and larger tyres.

Will you need to transport it?

If you need to transport your scooter regularly, opt for one that's lightweight enough for someone to lift when it's disassembled or folded down.

Can you store it near a socket?

If you can't, look for a mobility scooter that allows you to remove the battery and charge away from the scooter.

Know your measurements

Add a couple of inches to the width of the person while sat down to determine seat width. This takes into account bulkier clothing and ensures a comfortable fit.

What are the different types of mobility scooter?

3 Wheel Mobility Scooters

Ideal for use around the home as well as public areas like supermarkets and shopping centres. 3 wheel scooters have a smaller turning circle and are easier to manoeuvre than 4 wheel scooters. They're also narrower and easier to get on and off making them an ideal choice for people who find bending difficult.

4 Wheel Mobility Scooters

Suitable for people with a heaver BMI. 4 wheel mobility scooters are generally considered more stable than 3 wheel scooters due to the additional front wheel. They can tackle different terrains easily, e.g. grass and loose dirt, but can be more difficult to manoeuvre in crowded areas.

What else should you consider?

Wheel Size

Scooters that are used indoors or for short distances will generally have smaller wheels. On-road mobility scooters will have more durable, larger tyres.

Control Panel

The control panel tells you things like your speed and your scooter's battery life. It should be simple to use so you feel confident to travel independently.

Maximum Range

Most scooter models will tell you the distance you can travel before you'll need to re-charge. 4 wheel scooters tend to have a higher distance range.

Lights and Mirrors

Mobility scooters which can travel at 8mph are allowed to travel on-road. These will include extra features like rear-view mirrors and lights for driving at night.

Adjustable front tiller

To ensure you can easily reach the scooter handles, you'll need to adjust the steering column, or tiller, to the right height.

Coil suspension

Look out for a coil-spring suspension for an all-round more comfortable driving experience.
