Top tips to relax at home

Spa breaks and pamper days are a great way to unwind, but it doesn't need to end there. Our relaxation tips will allow you to carry on your experience in the comfort of your own home.

Yoga can help to release tension, increase flexibility, promote stress relief and ultimately relax. There are many different positions in yoga, including the lotus position or cross-legged position. When the body is positioned in an open way, like the lotus pose, it's claimed you are more susceptible to calming thoughts. If you're a beginner to yoga, try a couple of DVDs or classes with an instructor first to help you move into the correct positions.

Breathe deeply and meditate

Mediation can help you to relax by becoming 'present' in the current moment. Find a comfortable place, close your eyes and bring your attention to one thing. It could be listening to your own breathing or concentrating on an object or view. This helps you to focus your mind and achieve awareness and inner calm.

  • Sleep on a comfortable mattress and pillow. The average life expectancy for a mattress is 8- 10 years, if yours has exceeded this it may be time to buy a new one
  • Avoid bright lights in the evening as they confuse your body's natural body clock
  • Stick to a regular sleep schedule - even at the weekends
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol and big meals in the evening - this can cause indigestion and make sleeping difficult
