All smart deviced require a z-wave hub/controller. Smartthings hub being one of them. But there are others, including USB dongles, which you will then have to leave on a PC/Mac to run a server software. Smrt devices are then controlled either via the controller software interface, or in the case of Samsung hub, the mobile device through the Smartthings app. The Smartthings Hub is one of the most cost effective and convenient ways to connect your devices. Z-wave USB dongles are very versatile too, but can be a hassle and you have to power on your PC/Mac. You can also use a Raspberry Pi, but you will have to be a real power user/enthusiast to set things up.
All SmartThings Sensors will need to be connected to a SmartThings Hub to have functionality. In order to use SmartThings you will need the SmartThings Hub + SmartThings App + Compatible Devices. This support article will explain a little more - https://www.smartthings.com/uk/getting-starte...
