- Use rich moisturisers that contain moisture sponges like ceramides or glycerine.
- A non-abrasive exfoliator. Dry skin is also sensitive, so a gentle exfoliation weekly will remove dead skin cells without irritating.
- Use a weekly mask with avocado, coconut or argan oil for ultimate comforting hydration.

Do your blemishes never fully go? That’s because your skin makes too much oil and your pores clog easily. Causes include stress, genetics or a hormonal imbalance. And although not a cause of acne, a diet high in dairy and sugar can trigger breakouts.
There are different types of acne. If your acne is down to genetics or a hormonal imbalance, these tips alone may not be enough, and you might need to seek your doctor’s advice.
- Use a gentle cleanser AM and PM. It’s important to clean acne-prone skin properly – the pores already clog easily!
- Opt for products designed for blemish prone skin.
- Avoid harsh foaming facial washes, they’ll only irritate.
- Use non-comedogenic products to remove excess oil but retain moisture.
- Try not to touch your face. Dirt and oil from your hands won’t help.
- Don’t squeeze! This can lead to scarring and more irritation.
- Incorporate salicylic acid, retinol and benzoyl peroxide.
- Exfoliate, but gently. Non-abrasive exfoliators are best.
- Light, oil-free moisturisers with glycerine, ceramides or hyaluronic acid will hydrate without adding oil.
Reddening, tightening, dryness and itching are classic signs of sensitive skin. You may also sting or burn after using a product. Air conditioning and central heating as well as cold winds and UV rays can cause sensitivity too.

- Use products that are fragrance and alcohol free.
- All skin types should wear high SPF, but sensitive skin in particular should wear SPF50 for ultimate UV protection.
- Seek out calming and soothing ingredients like camomile, antioxidants, oatmeal, glycerine and ceramides.
- Avoid moisture-stripping facial washes and soaps.
- Anything labelled ‘gentle’ is always a good option.
- Exfoliate once a week only. Look to use non-abrasive exfoliants like salicylic acid that exfoliates without the need to rub or buff the skin.
