What can I do with a summer house?
Design a garden office
Need a place to focus? Create a motivational workspace with pinboards, stylish storage and comfy chairs to really make this space work for you. Top tip - try positioning your desk near the door or window, for fresh air and inspiring views.
Your own rural retreat
It’s important to have your own space for a bit of me time, and it couldn’t be easier to set up a relaxing spot. Start with a squidgy sofa or chair, a coffee table for your cuppa and finally, homely accessories for those finishing touches.
All out for alfresco dining
Lazy lunches, bottomless brunches or summer snacking. Host your guests with a unique dining experience. Fit in functional furniture to maximise your space and finish off with gorgeous dinnerware.
Make it multi-functional
No need to compromise when everything's all in one spot. A summer house with a side shed, means you can tuck away any general garden items, whilst still having a space to relax or entertain.
Don't forget your exterior extras
A summer house is quite the statement. Use it to complement your garden décor with subtle (or not so subtle) accessories...
Pop on some paint
Lift your whole garden by simply painting your summer house. Blues and greens enhance the natural colours of your outdoor space. Whilst darker greys will encourage nearby flowers to really stand out.

Things to consider...
Do I need planning permission for a summer house?
Generally, no. But if it covers over half the garden, isn't for domestic use or is over 3 metres high with a pent roof, or 4 metres high with an apex roof, it might. Larger summer houses which are within 2m of a boundary and over 2.5m high (8'2") will do. It’s always a good idea to double check with your local planning department.
What size summer house do I need?
There is no set size, just one that fits comfortably in the space and is functional for its use. It’s helpful to have clear access around your summer house, for any future maintenance.
Where should I place my summer house?
This depends on its purpose, but a sheltered spot that’s not too exposed is quite popular. Remember to consider the overhang of the roof when sizing up your space.
How do I maintain my summer house?
It’s recommended to use a wood stain and reapply once a year.
