How to pack for moving house

Whether you've done it all before, or you're moving for the first time, it's always best to pack earlier than you think you'll need to. It's a good idea to label your boxes by room, as you'll know where they need to go on moving day. It'll save you time unpacking too. Pack non-essential items first and save the stuff you use every day until the night before the big move.

House moving tips - what to buy when?

Four weeks before

Most larger items take longer to arrive, so it’s best to plan them further in advance. For large kitchen appliances, sofas, beds and mattress, you can usually select a delivery date on or close to your moving date.

It's always worth arranging a visit to your new property to measure up beforehand to make sure everything will fit.

    Two weeks before

As your moving date gets closer, you can start to order smaller, yet essential items.

It’s a good time to order your TV and small kitchen appliances, like the kettle, toaster and microwave, as well as lamps, curtains, a kitchen table, cutlery, dinnerware, fire alarms and other items you may need from the off.

      Moving week

On moving week you’re likely trying to be as prepared as possible for the big move.

You might have started packing already, but this is your last chance to get any extra boxes, bubble wrap, vacuum cleaners and cleaning equipment that you need for moving day.

        After you've moved in

With the essentials sorted, it won’t be long before you start to notice things you’ve missed and what you need to spruce up your space.

It’s not just about settling in, but about putting your stamp on your new place. Try our range of home furnishings for all the finishing touches you need to make your new place feel like home.

        What to buy - room-by-room

The first thing you're going to want to sort out for your bedroom is a bed, or at least a mattress, so you've got somewhere comfy to sleep after all your hard work moving into your new home.

        Living room

Somewhere to sit will be top of the agenda for furnishing your living room. Pick carefully, considering comfort and appearance, as this is probably the room you, and guests, will spend the most time in.

        Kitchen and dining

After all the stress of moving you're going to want a cuppa, so make sure you've got your kettle ready. And if you can't be bothered to cook properly (we don't blame you), toasters and microwaves will come in handy.

With your bathroom, it's all of the smaller things that will come in the most handy initially. Make sure you've got a shower curtain, small bin, toilet brush, towel rail or hook and a toothbrush holder.

        Utility room

Dedicated space or not, you won't want to skip on utility room items. Doing laundry is one of those jobs that will always need doing, so make sure you're equipped with a washing machine straightaway. And if the weather isn't great (and let's be honest that's highly likely) you'll need a way to dry them indoors too.
