Movie night done right
Transforming your living room into your personal cinema is simple. Get everything set up, grab lots of snacks (maybe a takeaway?) and make sure there’s enough seating for everyone – beanbags are an easy, comfy solution. Have a projector? It might be worth investing in some blackout blinds to ensure the picture is vibrant from every angle.
Sound and vision (decisions, decisions)
We break down the key considerations to make when setting up your home cinema.
TV or projector?
Consider upgrading to a 4K TV. Not only can you enjoy 4K content, you can also boost classic movies to near 4K quality straight away. For a real cinema-like experience at home, there's nothing like a projector. Aim it at a projector screen or large blank wall space in a pitch-black room for the best viewing quality.
Sound bars VS home theatre kits
Sound bars are a sleek, all-in-one piece of kit that help to beef up sound, and take up very little room. Some come with a subwoofer for an extra punch. For an immersive viewing experience, you may want to invest in a home cinema system for a more rounded sound.
To stream or not to stream?
Enjoy having a library of 1000s of movies to choose from with a Smart TV stick. Access both free and paid streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and BBC iPlayer for a ton of choice. On the other hand, there’s nothing quite like having your own DVD library of crowd-pleasers and family favourites – and knowing they’re not going to be gone the next day.
Create movie magic
Open-air film fest
Create the feel of an outdoor cinema in your own back garden. Pick a spot with level ground away from any indoor lights, fire up the projector and pick a summer classic. If neighbours are an issue, consider using wireless headphones to keep the noise down after dark. Outdoor lighting can create a wonderful atmosphere (just turn them off in time for the film).
Your own backyard box office
A screen on the green
You'll need a projector - don't worry, they're cheaper and quieter than you might think. Connect it to your DVD or Blu-Ray player, laptop or streaming device with an HDMI cable. Aim it at a projector screen, or stretch out a white sheet on your washing line.
Don’t leave anyone numb on the grass – you’ll need comfy seating for everyone. Camping chairs are easy to set up and pack away, or if you’re showing more than one film, your guests may prefer garden chairs and benches. Keep some blankets and throws handy in case it gets chilly.
Make it a party
Got a large audience? A few bowls of popcorn might not cut it – turn the evening into a real party and prepare a feast. Keep the party outdoors and light up the barbecue - you’ll not hear one grumbling tummy throughout the movie.
