Home gym ideas
No gym, no problem. Find all the equipment you’ll need to create a dedicated workout area in your own home.
How to make a home gym
First, decide on your gym area, whether that’s taking over an entire room, garage or just transforming a corner. Then you’ll need to decide what equipment you want in it – this will vary with different fitness goals, so make sure you know what kit you’ll need to work towards them.
And lastly, think about all the small extras you might want to include. Speakers are a must-have for motivational tunes to keep you going. Floor-length mirrors are great for perfecting form and technique, floor mats will protect your floor from equipment and provide a safe surface for exercising and fans will be a saviour when you’re all hot and sweaty!
Your guide to home gym equipment
Multi-gyms give you the ability to do numerous workouts that target different areas of your body with just one piece of kit. Generally the more expensive they are, the more complex they become, allowing you to do more exercises, focusing on more areas of your body. The best ones will be able to give you a full-body workout to a gym standard.
Weightlifting bars, barbells & weight plates
The bars and weights may look like a simple bit of kit, but they have massive amounts of strength and muscle building benefits. You can work almost every area of your body by just adjusting the types of exercises you do with them. And with separate weight plates available, you’re not restricted to one weight – we know one size does not fit all!
Benches are a staple of weight training. They allow you to train at different angles, give you flexibility of movement and provide support for your back and core allowing you to focus solely on the muscles you’re working rather than worrying about balance and positioning. But it’s not all about the weights – you can use them for other exercises like step ups and tricep dips too.
Compact and space-saving, dumbbells are a great addition to your home gym. Some will be a fixed weight and others will be adjustable. They have countless amounts of uses, and can target very specific parts of your body. As you use dumbbells independently from one another, they allow for more natural body movement and can also be used to correct muscle or strength imbalances.
It’s not all about the big pieces of kit - small equipment and accessories can be just as valuable. You can use most of them on their own for an effective workout or instead use them to supplement your training. So from ab exercisers, push up bars and pull up bars to resistance bands, vibration plates and foam rollers, find the little extras that could make all the difference.
