Tidying up your garden

After a summer of enjoying our gardens, where do we begin with the garden clean up? Our step-by-step guide can help get you started…

    Protect your plants.

Step 1 - protect your plants

Prune and deadhead your summer blooms, to help make room for your autumn bulbs to come through. This is the time to start planting next year’s spring bulbs too. Any plants that thrive better in warmer weather, move into a cold frame or greenhouse. And place any delicate flowers in a spot with some wind cover.

      Trim your trees.

Step 2 - trim your trees

Use a hedge trimmer to tidy up any overgrown hedges or bushes. Whilst a pole saw, loppers or chainsaw can clear any larger trees and branches - wear protective gear and use a ladder if needed. Make sure you cut up any larger pieces of wood and recycle them in your chiminea or fire pit.

      Love your lawn.

Step 3 - love your lawn

Give your lawn a final mow before winter really kicks in. Use a rake or leaf blower to remove any fallen leaves or debris first, and a grass trimmer to neaten up the edges. Make sure you clean your equipment before storing it away, so it’s in tip-top condition for next year.

Step 4 - freshen up your furniture.

Step 4 - freshen up your furniture

Before you pack away or cover up your garden furniture, give them a thorough clean with a pressure washer. Why not wash your bikes and garden toys too? On a dry day, give your wooden structures a final coat of wood stain or paint, to protect them through the winter weather.

      Don't forget to mulch

      Recycle your garden waste.

Don’t let all your garden trimmings go to waste – leaves, weeds, grass cuttings and twigs can be shredded and mulched into compost. Then use this to line your flower beds to protect them from frost.

If you have a smaller space, then opt for a storage box or bench. You can hide away those everyday garden tools or accessories, whilst they subtly blend in as extra garden seating.
