January birthstone: Garnet / Star sign: Capricorn December 22 - January 20
Available in a range of colours, but most recognisable in fiery red. January's birthstone Garnet symbolises peace, affluence and good health. It's the stone that celebrates the 2nd anniversary of marriage and is said to revitalise your mind, body and soul.
February birthstone: Amethyst / Star sign: Aquarius January 21 - February 19
The quartz stone Amethyst represents bravery, courage and stability. Its colour ranges from light lavender to deep purple and was one of the most prized stones of the ancient world. It's the birthstone for February and said to remove impatience and promote peace.
March birthstone: Aquamarine / Star sign: Pisces February 20 - March 20
The March birthstone Aquamarine is strongly associated with tranquillity and calmness, and has a beautiful soft pastel blue hue. In Latin it means 'water of the sea', due to the clarity and pureness of its colour, and is considered to be the treasure of mermaids in ancient lore.
April birthstone: Diamond / Star sign: Aries March 21 - April 20
The most treasured gemstone in the world, Diamonds have nearly always symbolised ever-lasting love. It's the gemstone for April and sixtieth wedding anniversaries, as well as the hardest substance known on earth.
May birthstone: Emerald / Star sign: Taurus April 21 - May 20
With its distinct green colour, Emerald is the perfect gem to represent springtime. It symbolises growth, healing, balance, harmony and domestic bliss. It's the birthstone for May, as well as twentieth and thirty-fifth anniversaries.
June birthstone: Pearl / Star sign: Gemini May 21- June 21
Pearls are graded on lustre, colour, complexion and size. With a timeless elegance, pearls are the birthstone for June and have been a jewellery staple for decades. They are believed to stand for luck, wisdom and integrity.
July birthstone: Ruby / Star sign: Cancer June 22 - July 22
The vibrant red colour of the ruby is often said to bring success in love and wealth. It is believed to bestow good fortune on all who wear it. Ruby is the birthstone for July and it is the second hardest gem behind Diamond.
August birthstone: Peridot / Star sign: Leo July 23 - August 23
Unlike many other gemstones, Peridot has just one colour, a striking yellow-green glow. Formed deep within the earth, Peridot is the birthstone for August and represents positivity, as well as physical and emotional belief.
September birthstone: Sapphire / Star sign: Virgo August 24 - September 23
Sapphires symbolise loyalty and integrity. Although most desired in deep blue, sapphires come in every colour except red. It is the birthstone for September and has historically been one of the most treasured gems in the world.
October birthstone: Opal / Star sign: Libra September 24 - October 23
Opal is the birthstone for October, it has a distinctive kaleidoscope appearance and can range in colour with no two opals the same. They're thought to represent confidence and self-esteem, while its name is said to mean 'to see a change of colour' in ancient Greek.
November birthstone: Topaz / Star sign: Scorpio October 24 - November 22
Said to bring friendship and faithfulness, Topaz comes in many hues but brilliant blue is now the most common. It's the birthstone for November and the origin of the word comes from the Sanskrit term Tapas, meaning fire.
December birthstone: Tanzanite / Star sign: Sagittarius November 23 - December 21
Tanzanite is the birthstone for December and one of the rarest gemstones as it's only found in Tanzania. Its blue appearance can sometimes look violet or a lighter lavender depending on the angle and it represents judgement and long-life.
