When is Mother’s Day?
Every year in the UK, Mother's Day falls on the 4th Sunday of Lent. Mother's Day 2021 is on Sunday 14 March. Over the world, Mother’s Day is celebrated over a range of dates by different countries, all with their own traditions and histories. These dates range from the second Sunday in February, in Norway, to as late in the year as 22 December, in Indonesia. The most widely used date is the second Sunday of May.
Don’t get caught out on Father’s Day, so there’s plenty of time to prepare.
What is Mother’s Day?
Mother’s Day wasn’t always dedicated to motherhood. The event was named Mothering Sunday, beginning in the 16th century. People return to their "mother church" for a service - the church where a person was baptised, christened or grew up. Through time, domestic servants were given this day off and on their way home, would pick flowers for the church or their mothers. Following the emergence of the Mothering Sunday Movement in 1914, the UK incorporated the American celebration of mothers and, by the middle of the 20th century, the holiday was widely commercialised.
In modern UK, it is a celebration of motherhood. Traditionally children give gifts to their mothers as an appreciation for everything do. Now it is even used to celebrate across all generations and even between grandparents and grandchildren.
Mother's Day presents
Traditional Mother’s Day gifts include flowers, cards with heartfelt messages, words of appreciation, poems and most importantly breakfast in bed! Often, people also take the opportunity to give gifts to their mother and grandmothers on Mother’s Day and nothing shows you’ve put more thought in to a present than personalised gifts. Mums can be humble and self-sacrificing, so treating them to something special to help them indulge goes a long way towards letting them know how much they mean to you. Why not decorate a special Mother’s Day table with some lovely candles and treat your special lady to a spot of afternoon tea? Complete with all her favourite sweet treats from luxury chocolates to pastries- don’t forget to whip out those special champagne glasses to toast the occasion with some bubbly prosecco.
