Father’s Day 2020
When is Father’s Day?
In the UK, Father’s Day is celebrated every year on the third Sunday of June, so Father’s Day 2020 is on 21 June. This is the date popularised by the U.S.A in the early 20th century and now followed by many countries. A handful of other countries celebrate on 19th of March, but the date does vary across the world, such as 23 February in Russia and 26 December in Bulgaria.
Father’s Day in the UK
Though the UK now celebrates Father's Day on 21 June, a day of celebration in the name of fatherhood also takes place on 19 March, this tradition can be found dating back to Catholic Europe in the Middle Ages. This was the day of the feast of Saint Joseph, Jesus’ legal father, who has throughout the ages been considered the patron saint of workers, the protector of the Catholic Church and a role model for fathers. It is thought that the celebration of fatherhood was actively encouraged by the Catholic Church on this day.
