what is black friday?
Black Friday started in America. It refers to the day after Thanksgiving when retailers offer big deals and discounts in what has become the unofficial launch of the festive shopping period.
The discounting practice to drive Christmas shopping, dates back as far as the Great Depression in 1939. Retailers successfully petitioned the President to move Thanksgiving to an earlier date so the Christmas shopping season would be longer.
The name "Black Friday" came into use later in the 1950s and 1960s. The Philadelphia Police Department used it to describe the chaos in the cities caused by the traffic jams and sheer volume of shoppers who came out to cash in on the discounts.
Desperate to snag the best deals, people began extending leave or calling in sick on Thanksgiving to get a four-day weekend. Since stores were open on the Friday, many people would use it to make a start on Christmas shopping. Due to this growing trend, many businesses started making the Friday an official paid holiday.
Black Friday in the UK didn't really exist until 2010, and it wasn’t until 2013 that we had what could be called the first Black Friday UK event that resembled the American version, with crowds surging into shops and making huge purchases online.
Last year, Black Friday was the most popular to date in the UK.
