What is a mirrorless camera?

Mirrorless cameras are often compared to DSLRs, with the key difference being their lack of a mirror. Instead, they have a sensor and, when a picture is taken, the light hitting the sensor is captured. This means that instead of an optical viewfinder used by a DSLR, you either look through an electric viewfinder or a display monitor. Though traditionally mirrorless cameras have often been more compact and struggled to reproduce the quality of the best DSLRs, this has changed in recent years. Many are still smaller, but some mirrorless cameras are larger, so those looking for a bigger grip have the choice. And many are now indistinguishable or better from DSLRs in the image quality department. The biggest advantage mirrorless cameras have is superior video capability.
