If you have been redecorating and are putting the finishing touches to your decor, or you want to refresh the current look of your rooms, cushions are the answer. Cosy cushions can add a lovely feeling of warmth and comfort to any room, whilst adding that extra bit of stylish decor to really bring together a stylish look. Whether for show or to add comfort they come in all shapes and sizes, so you will find something that suits. But what should you look for when picking the perfect cushion?
Be bold about your cushions
There was a time when everything had to match and be uniform. The material, print and colour of your sofa cushions were the same as your sofa. These days you can abandon those old rules and really be adventurous. Mix and match, choose contrasting colours, have a variety of sizes, and even go for more scatter cushions then you need. The rule is, there are no rules.
Coloured cushions
What does colour bring your room? Deep colours like rust or brown cushions bring a cosy comforting feel, associated with the great outdoors. Contrast them with lighter greens and mauves, or soften the look with cream. If your bedroom has a simple colour scheme, add depth and interest by layering on silver, white and grey cushions for a hotel chic look. White will add an airy feel, whereas grey serves as a modern but classic shade and altogether creates a calming space. If you have a large room, go for dramatic black cushions. And then enhance the dramatic look by adding other bold colours like deep pinks, purples and turquoise. Or if your room is on the darker side, inject light with yellow cushions. Match your cushions and your curtains. You might go for floor length luxury with lined velvet curtains if you're after a glamourous look, or a light natural linen, if you love the rustic textured look. Grey curtains are subtle but also sophisticated and provide a blank canvas that can easily be accessorised by other colours such as mustard, blues, crisp white or even other shades of grey and metallic. Choose from eyelet, pencil pleat or tab top, your new grey curtains will be great addition to your room.
Plain or patterned cushions?
Colour is only part of the story, there is also the question of whether you go for plain or printed. Even within plain cushions, there are so many options of materials. Go for a grey knitted rectangle cushion, or a white faux fur square cushion. Go for a quilted cushion that adds texture and depth, but also has an extra layer of softness. If you go for a printed cushion, what will you choose? Traditional floral or checks, Toy Story, Harry Potter or Fortnite cushions for the kids or maybe go for an animal print. With no limit to how many you have, mix and match to your hearts content.
Size and shape
The most popular shape is the classic square, tried and tested it fits any sofa, but keep your eyes out for round and Lombard cushions. What about a selection of small cushions in the bedroom, perhaps in an opulent jacquard. Throws will enhance the sumptuous and luxurious look, creating a sleep chamber fit for Hollywood royalty.
Whatever your choice, combine with some scatter cushions which you can place wherever you like to complement larger cushions. Have you considered a floor cushion? They are not only brilliant for extra guest seating and gathering people around the coffee table, but they create air of relaxation and easygoingness. Use them instead of traditional seating in your conservatory or summerhouse for a middle eastern look. Couple it with some copper lamps to complete the look.
We also have a huge range of cushion pads, large, medium and small, which will give new life to any old and battered cushions.
Cushion materials
Play around with fabrics and textures to add depth and interest. Chose a combination of plush velvets, cool linens and chunky knits. The velvet adds a touch of opulence, balances out the relaxed look of the linen. Faux fur creates a softness you will want to sink into, and chunky wool will give your room warmth and cosiness. Finish it off with a scented candle that will help you unwind at the end of the day. Pile them all together, and even if they are all the same colour, the different textures will still look effective.
