Don't Buy If You Have A MAC

"We checked - it said it was compatible, but it is not. When we called Olympus they told me that you can plug the dictaphone into the computer and download the sound files (which you then cannot listen to on the MAC) but the Dragon software does not work, you have to buy the industry version.
The recorder has good sound quality, and you can play it at twice the speed, although sometimes I would just like to fast forward it!
Pretty easy to use. But if you have a MAC buy the one without the software."

5Stars Excellent

"The VN8500 is a very good piece of kit. I have been using it to record some meetings to save having to take extensive notes and I have been surprised how well it picks up all the voices. Play back is easy and transferring files to the PC is also very simple. I did download a file converter to convert to MP3 but otherwise it works brilliantly.
As for the transcription software, once you install it, you have to read a defined passage into the software so it can learn your voice and hence transcribe the files. I have not tried this yet as I have not had the time, so can't comment, but am not sure just how good this will be."

Good recorder iffy software

"I use this mainly for focus group research. It records really well and transfers easily to PC.
I bought it based on the Dragon transcribing software that it is bundelled with. This was not worth it. It took forever to set up then didnt even get close to transcribing the conversation.
So my advice is that as a dictaphone it is fine but bont be too hopefully about the Dragon software."

"I bought it specifically because I don't like typing but it was transcribing things I did not say. Very disappointing"
