Jargon Buster

Sat navs are easy to install – and many are equally useful away from the car, guiding you even if you're on foot. Here's a list of some terms used.

2D/3D The sat nav can display maps in both 'flat' 2D form and 3D, keeping the view more true to life.
Bluetooth calling Connects to a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, allowing you to make and receive hands free calls through the sat nav speaker.
Full postcode search Allows you to pinpoint your destination using the postcode. A quick and easy way of programming your sat nav.
GPS Global Positioning System. The network of satellites orbitting Earth that sat nav systems use to locate your position.
MP3 player function Upload MP3 tracks to your unit and listen to your favourite tunes on the move.
Photoviewer Shows your digital photos to family and friends wherever you are, using the screen on your sat nav.
Points of interest Alerts the driver to things such as petrol stations, hotels, cash points and restaurants.
Position Plus A feature that prevents your sat nav 'losing its way' when you pass through a tunnel or a heavily built-up area where GPS reception may be poor.
Pre-loaded maps Defines which areas have been pre-loaded to the sat nav. Maps can usually be updated via the manufacturer’s website.
Removable memory card Lets you add updated maps or different countries by simply changing the memory card.
Safety camera alerts Alerts the driver to fixed location safety cameras. This information can be updated using a subscription service.
Sat Nav Satellite navigation. The general term for all types of equipment that locate you and help you plan routes using the GPS system.
Screensize The measure of visible picture from one corner to the other, diagonally across the screen
Speech recognition Recognises spoken destination instructions, allowing you to programme your route just by speaking.
TMC Traffic Message Channel. Updates your sat nav with real-time traffic information over the radio network.
Traffic information The unit will display live information regarding traffic jams, accidents and road works. This service is usually available through subscription.
