Choosing the right mattress

Babies benefit from a supportive mattress to help them sleep well and the better the baby sleeps, the better you'll sleep. Ensure you select the right mattress size for your cot or Moses basket; it should fit the cot without any gaps. Ensure it is always kept clean and dry. We advise having a spare mattress cover for when the other is in the wash.

Our mattresses are made from superior fabric, providing comfortable support for your baby and they all comply with British Safety and Fire Standards.

There are three main cot mattress types to choose from. Whichever type you choose, they all come with washable, breathable and reversible covers.

    hypo-allergenic foam mattress
  • Hypo-allergenic foam mattresses have a non-allergenic inner foam core combined with an anti-allergenic and water-resistant surface.
  • sprung mattress
  • Anti-allergenic mattresses help to prevent allergies and are an excellent choice if your baby is especially sensitive to dust mites, or if they have allergies or asthma.
  • Sprung mattresses offer excellent comfort and support with a coiled spring unit underneath a non-PVC surface.
  • cool flow sprung mattress
  • Cool flow sprung mattresses have high-quality spring units beneath an anti-allergenic cover for long-term durability and support. The lightweight, breathable material means your baby's body heat is spread out effectively, helping them stay cool and comfortable.

Safe sleeping guidelines

If this is your first baby, you'll want to be aware of some of the recommended guidelines on the best and the safest way for your baby to sleep. Read these key pointers to help ensure that you and your baby get the best night's sleep:

  • For the first six months it's recommended that your baby sleep in a Moses basket, crib or cot in a room with you, before they move on to sleeping in their own room or nursery.
  • The safest way for your baby to sleep is on their back, rather than on their side or front.
  • Babies settle more easily on their back if they have been placed that way to sleep from the start.
  • For safe sleeping they should be laid in the feet-to-foot position on the mattress. This means your baby is placed with their feet touching the end of the cot, so they're not able to wriggle under the covers, as this could restrict breathing.
  • Make sure your baby's head stays uncovered.
  • Avoid using quilts, pillows or duvets for babies under 12 months. Instead use sheets and layers of lightweight blankets.
  • The bedclothes should be tucked in firmly no higher than the shoulders. This way your baby cannot wriggle under the bedclothes whilst they sleep.
  • You can also use a baby sleeping bag, sometimes called a Grobag. If you do, it needs to be without a hood, very lightweight and the right size around the neck, so your baby won't slip down inside the bag.
