Power
Electric lawnmowers are measured in watts. A higher wattage means more power and a better performance.
The engine capacity of petrol mowers is measured in cubic centimetres (cc). The larger the cc, the greater the power output and the more effective the mower.
Cut-blade width in cm
The cut-blade width you require will depend on the size of your lawn.
For lawns sizes:
Cut height
The cutting height can be adjusted for the length of the lawn. A wide cutting range is useful if you have to cut more than one lawn of different qualities, or different heights at various times of the year.
Box capacity
The capacity of the grass collection box is measured in litres. A larger capacity saves numerous trips to the compost heap. Look out for mulch and side discharge for feeding nutrients back into your lawn.
Cable length
For electric lawnmowers, if the cable is not long enough to reach from the house to the furthest point of the lawn, you’ll need an extension cable suitable for outdoor use and an RCD safety adaptor.
Weight
Different mowers vary quite considerably in size and weight. Check the weight of your mower before you buy, as this will affect how easy the mower is to manoeuvre and to lift in and out of storage.
Safety
To ensure safety, all outdoor electrical equipment should be connected to the mains via a plug-in RCD adaptor (residual current detector), which cuts power automatically to protect against electrocution.
Moss and layers of dead grass act like a sponge, preventing light, water and nutrients reaching the roots. A powered lawn raker removes moss and dead grass allowing your lawn to drain properly and the grass to grow back healthy and strong.
Throughout autumn, a lawn raker can also be useful to remove fallen leaves.
