Anti-blurDigital cameras have a host of extra features to help you take the perfect photo. These features help you to get rid of blur, capture the smile on everyone's face, and even shoot your own videos with ease.

  • Most digital cameras have anti-blur/image stabilisation features to reduce the effect of a shaky hand.
    • Digital anti-blur adjusts the picture after it is taken using internal software.
    • Optical anti-blur gives better results than digital, as the camera detects the shake and corrects this before the picture is taken.
    • A combination of both technologies gives the very best results.
  • If you enjoy taking pictures of landscapes or group photos, then consider a camera with a wide angle lens.
    • A wide angle lens allows you to fit the entire group or scene into the picture without having to stand a long way back.
    • Small lenses are better than large for wide angle purposes: for example, a camera with a 26 or 28mm wide angle will allow you to fit a lot more into the picture than a 36mm lens.
  • Face detection picks out the faces within your shot and focuses on them, rather than the background.
    • Some are able to detect several faces in a scene or even track moving people, ideal for photographing sports events.
  • New advances in this technology now include face recognition. Cameras with this feature will prioritise recognised faces when taking pictures.
    • For example, when focusing on a number of people, it will ensure the recognised person is kept in focus.
  • Smile detection/smile shutter- this clever technology can scan faces and detect when a person smiles, firing the shutter automatically.
    • Obviously this feature can be disabled allowing you to capture natural moments when people may not be smiling directly at the camera.
  • To give you the best results, many digital cameras have pre-programmed scene modes, which set the camera for various pre-determined scenarios, such as: portraits, landscape, night time, sports, etc.
    • Some more advanced digital cameras now set the mode automatically, adjusting settings based on the scene they are viewing.
    • This takes all the fuss out of changing the settings yourself.
  • Most digital cameras will also allow you to shoot video with sound.
    • Video playback can be done through a PC or laptop or by connecting the camera to a TV.
    • You can also watch the video back on the cameras LCD screen; however cameras without a built-in speaker are not able to play back the sound.
    • For the very best quality, look out for cameras that capture video in High Definition (HD)
