Lawnmowers

Finding your ideal lawnmower depends on the size of your lawn and the type of finish you want. Think about the width of the cut – a wider mower will get the job done faster – and decide whether you want the convenience of a mower which collects clippings as you go.

Cylinder lawn mowers

Cylinder lawn mowersCylinder mowers’ scissor action blades give you the cleanest and neatest cut but may not be the best choice for uneven lawns. Rear rollers give your lawn a traditional striped finish and are ideally suited to flat frequently cut lawns.

Hover lawn mowers

Hover lawn mowersLightweight, inexpensive and easy to manoeuvre, hover mowers are great for smaller gardens, uneven surfaces and banks. The scythe blade cuts quickly and neatly through rough grass. Look out for hover lawn mowers with collection boxes to help keep the grass clippings in one place. Alternatively if space is of a premium, the smaller ones are easier to store as they do not have a grass collection box.

Rotary lawn mowers

Rotary lawn mowersRotary mowers achieve a coarser finish than cylinder mowers but are better able to cope with uneven and irregular shaped lawns. These lawn mowers are a durable choice for medium to large lawns. All have wheels that support the weight of the mower, making it easy to push and easier to mow in a straight line. Cutting height is adjustable and a rotating scythe blade gives a neat finish. If you’re after a traditional striped lawn, go for a model with an in-built roller.

Petrol mowers

Petrol mowersPowerful petrol mowers make short work of longer grass and larger areas, with no need to trail a cable as you mow. Look-out for self propelled models that are easier to use. Oil and fuel is needed to ensure the smooth running of all petrol mowers.

Key features:

  • Engine capacity – measured in cubic centimetres (cc).  The larger the cc, the greater the power output making it easier to cut lawns.
  • Box capacity – is the capacity of a grass collection box measured in litres.  Look out for mulch and side discharge for feeding nutrients back into your lawn.
  • Cutting width – this is measured in cm. The larger the lawn, the wider the cutting width is required.
  • Cutting heights – height adjustments available for the length of the lawn.

Lawn rakers

Lawn rakersMoss and layers of dead grass act like a sponge, preventing light, water and nutrients reaching the grass roots. A powered lawnraker effectively removes moss and dead grass so your lawn can drain properly and the grass can grow back healthy and strong, which also helps show which areas need re-seeding. Throughout Autumn, a lawnraker can be used to remove fallen leaves and light debris from the lawn.
