Wearable technology 101

Any gadget that can be worn by a user. Usually refers to fitness trackers and smart watches, but wearable cameras also fall into this category.

Worn on the wrist, basic fitness trackers measure steps, calories burnt, sleep quality and distance walked. More advanced models may also measure heart rate and track GPS.

A smart watch is an extension of your smartphone on your wrist. You can see calls, texts and social media notifications and access downloadable apps. Some also have fitness tracking functions.

No. Only certain models can measure heart rate from your wrist, however some fitness trackers can sync with separate heart rate monitor bands to record your workout.

Fitness trackers that include sleep trackers use an accelerometer to measure movement. It records periods of movement as being restless or awake and periods of inactivity as sleep.

Fitness trackers can't give you 100% accurate readings due the number of variables. However they are useful for getting consistent relative results, so you can tell if you're burning more calories compared to a previous day.

While most smart watches will require a compatible smartphone, many fitness trackers do not require a smartphone as you can access your recorded data online via a laptop or computer.
