What's the difference between prams, pushchairs, strollers and buggies?

In simple terms: prams are designed for newborns; pushchairs are for babies who can sit up; strollers are for toddlers or older children and buggies are generally either pushchairs or strollers (the word is just a colloquial term rather than being something different).

Prams

Made for newborns, they are the best choice when preparing for a new arrival.

Prams - All you need to know

Prams allow your baby to lie flat, which is essential until your baby can sit up comfortably - this will usually be when they're 3 - 6 months old.

Traditional prams are actually rare now; you're more likely to find a pram that doubles as a pushchair, saving you having to buy them separately for the different stages of your baby's development.

Pushchairs

Babies, toddlers, twins or triplets - pushchairs cater for them all.

Pushchairs - All you need to know

Originally pushchairs were the next step up from prams - they were for babies, but not newborns.

Now, many pushchairs can be used from birth due to reclining features or compatibility with carrycots, which both allow your baby to lie flat.

Our pushchairs can also come in twin, tandem and triple varieties.

Twin and triple pushchairs are when the seats sit side by side, whereas tandem pushchairs are when one seat is in front of the other. These types are ideal for twins, triplets or if you have two or three young children of similar ages.

Strollers

Usually lightweight and collapsible, strollers are great for busy families on the go.

Strollers - All you need to know

Strollers have more cross-over with pushchairs now, with some also having the ability to be used from birth. But generally, in the traditional sense, they are designed for toddlers or older children as they don't have as many features as the other types, meaning there's less support for your child.

They tend to be lightweight and are easily foldable, making travelling on public transport, fitting into cars and going abroad via planes easier. Airlines have specific restrictions for pushchairs/strollers so before you travel, it's best to check they will definitely meet the specifications.

We also have twin and tandem strollers available.

Travel systems

Combining a pushchair and car seat, these are ideal for families that often travel by car.

Travel systems - All you need to know

Travel systems are pushchairs that come with a detachable car seat, which should just be able to slot or click in.

Some come with a carrycot too so they can be used for newborn babies that need to lie flat.

The car seats that come with the pushchair can vary in type - see our car seat buying guide to find out more information on each type to make sure it's suitable from your child.

Most travel system pushchairs should be compatible with more than just the car seat type that it comes with, giving you more options as your baby continues to grow.

Running pushchairs

Running with pushchairs has become increasingly popular in the past few years, but you need to make sure you pick the right kind. As a general rule of thumb, any pushchair which has three wheels as opposed to four will be more suitable for running with.
