What is a ladies shaver?
An electric lady shaver trims hair above the root using blades that move beneath a foil. The foil traps hair, then cuts it.
How easy are lady shavers to use?
Very easy – just plug in or charge, and then just switch on to start. Some shavers can be used in the shower or with shaving gels. This helps you get a better cut and is gentler on skin.
How long does it take for shaved hair to grow back?
Hair grows back quickly when it's cut above the root. Shavers are designed to be used regularly.
Does shaving hurt?
No, although those with sensitive skin could experience irritation. A shaver that can be used wet should help prevent this.
Anything else I should know?
Shavers can have a cord or be cordless. If choosing cordless, check battery and recharge times.
What is a ladies trimmer?
Trimmers work in the same way as shavers, but are designed to be used for harder-to-reach and sensitive areas to trim and tidy hair.
How easy is it to use a ladies trimmer?
Very easy – just switch on and use. As with lady shavers, some can be used wet to get a better cut and reduce skin sensitivity.
How long does it take for hair to grow back?
Trimmers cut hair above the root, so hair tends to grow back quickly.
Does trimming hair hurt?
No. Because they're designed to be used for more delicate areas, they're usually very comfortable to use. Choose a model that can be used wet it you have sensitive skin.
What is waxing?
Warm wax is applied to your skin in strips and will grip hair as it quickly dries. You then pull the strips off to remove the hair.
How easy is it to wax?
Wax can be a bit messy, and it takes time for the wax to heat up before you start. But it is fast if you want to treat large areas.
How long does waxing last?
About a month to 6 weeks. As you're removing hair from the root it takes longer to grow back. You will, however, need to wait until hair is at least 0.2cm long (0.6cm ideally) or the wax won't work as well.
Does waxing hurt?
Waxing is like removing a large plaster in one quick pull - it causes a sudden shock. There are ways you can prepare your skin to reduce pain and it should become less painful each time as hair may grow back finer.
What is epilating?
Epilating is like tweezing lots of hairs at once. It uses rotating discs that move together and apart, picking up and plucking out hairs from your skin.
How easy is it to use an epilator?
Epilating is easy and fast to perform, and can be typically used on hair as little as half a millimetre long. Check manufacturer's guidelines for instructions.
How long does epilating last?
Typically it takes about a month for hair to grow back.
Does epilating hurt?
Epilating can be uncomfortable, especially if using it on areas of thick growth. If you have sensitive skin, choose a model that can be used wet to reduce irritation. Some models may also have a massage function that makes it more comfortable. Hair typically grows back finer, so over time it can become more comfortable.
What is electrolysis hair removal?
Home electrolysis hair removal is different than traditional electrolysis, which uses a probe to permanently destroy hair follicles one by one. Home electrolysis uses heat to damage hair follicles, causing hair to shed and grow back slower over time.
Is electrolysis hair removal easy?
Home electrolysis is simple, but takes time to cover larger areas. You also need to 'buff' your skin afterwards to remove dead hair from the roots.
How long do the results of electrolysis last?
Home electrolysis is both a hair remover and a growth inhibitor. After use, hair will fall from the root and new hair growth will be slower. Typically you would use it for 2 – 3 times a week, for 4 – 6 weeks, and then only when required afterwards.
Does electrolysis hair removal hurt?
No. The level of heat used should only make your skin feel warm. It can however create a slight burning odour, but this is only momentary.
Intense Pulse Light (IPL) Hair Removal
What is IPL Hair Removal?
Intense pulse light is a salon technology that applies gentle pulses of light to your skin. This light is absorbed by hair follicles, creating heat that damages the melanin inside. This slows growth and causes the hair to shed. Over time, growth should permanently decrease.
Is IPL easy it to use?
It's easy to do, but takes time to cover larger areas. You should shave the areas you want to treat before use, but hair must not be removed from the root. If you've waxed or used an epilator, wait at least 2 days before using IPL.
How long does IPL last?
IPL slows hair growth to the point where only occasional maintenance is needed. Typically, a device would be used once every 2 weeks, over a 10 week period, and then only occasionally after that. It is most effective on dark hair and light skin. Always check manufacturer's guidance regarding suitability for skin types.
Does IPL hurt?
IPL will make your skin feel warm. IPL shouldn't hurt if you have a light skin tone. If you have a medium skin tone, you will need to choose a model with adjustable light intensity, so you can use a lower setting if it is uncomfortable.
Some models can detect your skin type and automatically adjust to a level that should suit your skin.
What skin and hair types can use IPL?
This chart should give you an idea of whether IPL is likely to be successful on your hair or skin type. Note that IPL devices may differ. Always check the manufacturer's instructions before use.
Laser Hair Removal
What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal uses a strong, concentrated beam of light that targets the melanin in your hair follicles. The light is absorbed and causes damage to the follicle, causing hair to shed and growth to virtually cease over time. Because a laser needs a lot of power, this has traditionally been a salon-only treatment, but a few home devices are now available to use.
How easy is laser hair removal?
It's easy to do, but it takes time to cover larger areas. You'll need to shave any areas you want to treat before use. Do not remove hair from the root using wax or an epilator. If you do, wait 2 days before using laser hair removal.
How long does laser hair removal last?
Laser hair removal slows and prevents hair growth so only occasional maintenance is needed. Typically you would use it once every 2 weeks for 3 months, and only when required after that. Many lower-cost devices may use HPL (heat pulse light) which works in the same way, but is less powerful and takes longer to work.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Your skin will get warm, but it shouldn't hurt providing you adjust the intensity to suit your skin type. Laser hair removal is best suited to lighter skin tones, a lower intensity is recommended for darker tones to avoid discomfort. Some devices use an automatic sensor to detect your skin type and will adjust the intensity accordingly.
Anything else I should know?
Laser hair removal is most effective for light to medium skin tones. Not every device may be suitable for dark skin. It is not effective on white or grey hair, but is good at treating areas of thick growth.
