DOME TENTS

Classic style, modern assembly. Flexible poles cross over the top of the tent, forming a stable structure. These tents suit year-round camping.

TUNNEL TENTS

Spacious, tunnel-shaped tents, many of which split into separate rooms to create a home away from home. Perfect for families and group trips.

Bear in mind that the sizes in tent descriptions don't include luggage, so 2 person means just two people, not two people + their suitcases + their dog. Size up to make sure you'll fit everything in comfortably.

No one wants to wake up floating. Look out for the "hydrostatic head" figure - the higher the figure, the more waterproof the tent. Starting at 800mm, a rating of 2000-3000mm is ideal if you're expecting a rather rainy trip.

If you're expecting a downpour, an extra groundsheet can help - add it to the side of the tent that will be most exposed to the rain and wind.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

Don't find out you're missing a bit once you're in the middle of a field. Unbox and set up in your garden before your trip so you can check all the pieces are there, and that you can follow the instructions.

CHECK FOR ANY LEAKS

Leave your tent out in the garden for a few days and, if it's not raining, use a hose or watering can to create a fake shower. Have a friend get inside and run their hand over any seams to check for leaks.

PREVENT CONDENSATION

Feeling a bit damp after the first night? The cause is likely condensation. To avoid this, keep vents and doors open when possible, and store any wet boots and clothes outside.

SLEEPING BAGS

Bringing the right sleeping bag is a must. Check the season rating on a sleeping bag - ranging from 1 to 4, it will tell you whether it's more suitable for camping in the sun or for cold winter nights.

MUMMY SLEEPING BAGS

Cosy "mummy" sleeping bags are more fitted, meaning they have better heat retention, and are designed for one person. They're also easy to pack and come with a hood for extra warmth.

ENVELOPE SLEEPING BAGS

Rectangular "envelope" sleeping bags have a zip which opens the bag completely to double up as a blanket. They're more spacious - many are a double, and some can be zipped together to make room for two.
