Bed Linen Guide

Don't let strange industry terms get in the way of choosing the right
bedding for you. We've deciphered them so you don't have to.
In fact all you have to think about is how cosy your sleep is
going to be with your new bedding!

Thread count

Sometimes referred to as TC, thread count refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads per square inch. The higher the thread count, the softer the bedding.

Polycotton

Made from a mixture of cotton and polyester fibre. It is comfortable, requires minimal ironing and is easy to care for.

Polyester microfiber

A combination of fine threads of polyester and polyamide to form a single thread. It is durable, comfortable and has fast-drying properties.

Cotton

Soft and durable with natural breathability that helps to provide a cool and comfortable sleep.


Weave and decoration

Percale

A type of plain weave that is closely woven together. It results in a smooth and crisp cloth which has a cool and
fresh feel against your skin.

Sateen

Not to be confused with satin, it is a sumptously soft and silky fabric with a sheen finish. To maintain its smoothness,
a more gentle wash is required.

Waffle

The weaving technique results in a textured fabric that is waffle-like in both look and feel.

Seersucker

Tends to have a puckered or wrinkled appearance for a luxurious textured finish.

Jacquard

Created using a specialist jacquard loom, patterns and designs can be weaved into the material for textural variety.

Techniques

Printing

Allows for more detail and intricate design to be added to fabrics. It can be achieved by a traditional rotary printing press or a digital inkjet printer for even more detail and vivid colour.

Piped edges

This technique is used for a decorative finish. To create the definition, fabric is folded and sewn into a 'pipe' with either the same type of fabric or a different colour for contrast.

Mini oxford edges

Also known as a flat pipe, mini oxford edges are a smaller version of the oxford pillowcase border on a duvet cover.

Brushed

Fabric is 'brushed' to remove any lint and fibres, resulting in a softer feel while keeping the material breathable.

Embellishment

The addition of decorative detailing, such as sequins, beads or ribbons.

Bed linen pieces

Fitted sheets

These come with elasticated corners for
a snug fit over your mattress, holding the
sheet in place.

Flat sheets

They can be used as a bottom sheet or a top sheet between you and your duvet. Tuck them in for a tailored neatness.

Valances

To help you achieve a consistent look between your bed and bedding, they go over the base of your bed, held in place by your mattress.

Pillowcases

There are two main types: Housewife and Oxford Edge. Both provide a snug fit but Oxford Edge's stitched flat hem gives it a bigger look.

Bedding sets

They will include a duvet cover and pillowcases
(1 for single bedding sets, and 2 for every other size).
