Good, but only in certain areas

After the initial experience of the amazing screen on the Galaxy Book, my experience over the rest of the month has been mixed. First the positives: Its a great form factor, having the ability to switch from tablet to laptop mode is great. The screen is mighty impressive, a good example of where the phones and tablet technology crosses over. Its powerful, running the latest iteration of intels i5 processor its got some grunt and is much faster than previous generations. Now the negatives; The keyboard is not responsive enough, unfortunately you tend to miss the first few key strokes on this keyboard, possibly a power saving or wake feature is not fully optimised, either way its frustrating to use after the device has just woken from sleep/startup Now the big one for me, its "lapability" by that i mean its ability to be used in your lap in laptop mode. This device does not have the ability to be used comfortably in this configuration, other competitors have this nailed and its very jarring going from that experience to the one offered by the Galaxy Book. Its a deal breaker for me as i use my 2in1 device in different environments, this device just cannot handle them all unfortunately. The other issue is typing on a flat keyboard, anyone that is used to typing typically has the keyboard at a slight incline, the galaxy book keyboard just cannot do this, meaning a strained typing experience on a device that is meant to replace other devices (laptops, tables and PCs). Samsung has missed a few tricks with the Galaxy Book 12, and thats flexibility. As a standalone tablet this device is great. Transform it into anything else and it struggles. I'd almost go and say its not a 2 in 1, but a 1.5 in 1 device and thats a shame as Hardware wise, this device is excellent!

Great Laptop Replacement.

I have been using the Galaxy Book for a couple of weeks now, I wanted to really get to grips with it before settling down to review it, and I have to say that I have been very impressed. PROS: The Galaxy Book screams quality with its aluminium body, and starting it up I immediately appreciated the beautiful 12" HD+ super AMOLED display. The tablet snaps satisfyingly into the keyboard case, and looks stunning. The 2.5GHz Intel Core i5-7200U is quick to boot up and the choice of the pen input lends the tablet an extra versatility when it comes to anything artistic. I used it to very good effect for some photo editing. Windows 10 takes a bit of getting used to but is packaged with some very useful software, and flicks pretty seamlessly between desktop and tablet modes. The battery life is fantastic, I managed to use it for the entirely of a 7 hour flight without having to worry about it dying. Either of the USB-C ports can be used to charge the Book, and embracing the new USB is a great touch, although it would have been nice if Samsung had packaged a converter in to allow the use of full sized USB accessories straight out of the box. CONS: The soft design of the keyboard case does not lend itself amazingly to sitting on an uneven surface such as your lap, and I have had moments where the Book has switched to tablet mode as I was trying to type on the keyboard. Also on that note, the keyboard seems to turn itself off when not in use, which would be fine, but a couple of keystrokes are needed to wake it up when you do then want to start typing again, which can be a bit frustrating. I accidentally left it charging while in a soft case, and when I went to use it the next morning it was very slow to respond, I think that I had inadvertently overheated it a tad. Fortunately after a restart it was working fine again, just something to be aware of. Finally while it makes a fantastic lightweight replacement for a full laptop, the keyboard case gets in the way somewhat if bedtime netflix is on the cards. A lighter alternative for standing it up without the keyboard attached would be extremely useful. SPECS CPU: 2.5GHz Intel Core i5-7200U (dual-core, 3MB cache, up to 3.1GHz) Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 620 RAM: 8GB Screen: 12-inch, Full HD+ (2,160 x 1,440) Super AMOLED touchscreen Storage: 256GB SSD Ports: 2 x USB-C, microSD card reader, headset jack Connectivity: 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi (2 x 2 MIMO), Bluetooth 4.1 BLE Camera: 13MP rear camera with auto-focus;

An incredibly portable, yet capable device!

I’ve had the Samsung Galaxy Book (SGB from here on) for several weeks now & used it for an array of tasks, from MS Office to Photoshop (image editing) to Native Instruments Maschine (music production). I really wanted to see if it would be capable of replacing my several year-old Samsung R730 laptop. Here’s my findings: Unboxing: The SGB was well packaged & gives off a quality vibe right from the moment you open the box. The box it came in is as expected for devices like this nowadays. Minimal, well laid out & functional, yet classy. Size & Portability: One of the main selling points for the SGB is its size & portability. It really is the ultimate device of this type in terms of portability, in my opinion. It’s also very lightweight for its size & screen. When folded its extremely portable. The keyboard & stand help protect the tablet well. When it’s unfolded & propped up on a desk with its integrated stand its very neat & tidy, taking up minimal desk space. Connectivity: The SGB comes with two USB-C ports, however, Samsung states that you should only use their charger & lead to charge/power the device. That means one of the USB-C ports is already gone if you are wanting to use the device for extended periods as you'll need it to be plugged in so as not to run out of battery. That leaves only one USB-C port left. Thankfully USB-C is designed to be multifunction & by connecting a hub, you can have HDMI out, Ethernet, & many more USB devices connected. Screen: The screen is definitely the SGBs trump card. The AMOLED panel has extremely rich colours & super dark blacks. The only time I’ve seen other screens with the same levels of black is when they’ve been switched off! The touchscreen sensitivity is also brilliant. It’s picks up everything, yet during general use it doesn’t suffer from ghost touches or oversensitivity. S-Pen Stylus: This really blew my mind as to how well it works with drawing & art applications. It’s extremely accurate & sensitive making detailed work a joy. The button on the side is also very handy for erasing mistakes, etc. My girlfriend has done most of the artistic testing here as she is in to drawing & painting. She thinks it’s absolutely great & gives it a big thumbs up. Performance: Generally, the SGB is good in terms of performance. You wouldn’t expect it to be a workhorse for demanding tasks, but for low & medium weight work, it’s exceptional for its size. Heavier users interested may look at the 8GB RAM version, however.
